On Monday 20th July 2009 it will have been forty years to the day since man landed on the moon, or so we’re told. Cue dramatic music.

For every major global event there are always pockets of conspiracy theorists questioning what really happened, and rightly so. Without them Channel 5 would have to revert to programmes on Nazis and sex fetishes.

According to some of these theorists Michael Jackson died four years ago, Elvis Presley is still alive and the American government was behind the 9/11 terror attacks, but the original, the daddy of them all, is that we did not land on the moon.

So why has the moon landing prompted debate? Like most problems in America it can be traced back to, and blamed on, President Richard Nixon. While Neil Armstrong’s words of: “It’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” were still fresh in people’s minds, Nixon’s government was collapsing under the weight of the Watergate scandal. The public’s confidence in the government was shattered; people were no longer willing to believe what the US government told them.

There’s no consistent theory for what did actually happen, but countless theories about what didn’t. Let’s run the risk of being punched in the face by Buzz Aldrin and take a look at some of these theories.

How is the flag swaying in the air when there’s no atmosphere?

The astronauts are moving the flag around trying to get the pole to stick in the moon’s surface, because there’s no atmosphere on the moon there’s no air resistance so once you move something it carries on going.

Why can’t we see any stars?

Stars are reflective images. They would have had to have used a really fast shutter speed. If you stood under a street lamp and took a picture of the night sky you wouldn’t capture any stars either.

Who took the pictures?

The pictures were taken by a camera mounted on the outside of the Eagle lander.

There are shadows on the surface at different angles indicating more than one light source.

The moon is an uneven surface, counter that with a low sun and you can easily explain the distorted angles of the shadows.

There is a rock with a ‘C’ marked on it, which is a prop and shows the landing was staged and shot in a film studio.

The mark doesn’t appear in the original Nasa negatives or prints. Under close inspection experts claim it to be a hair or fibre that has contaminated a later reproduction.

A simple online search will show you mountains of evidence for both arguments but whether you think it’s the most spectacular accomplishment for man or the most spectacular hoax, whichever way you look at it, it is spectacular.

Simply put, we did land on the moon. Russia was in a race with the USA and they had the ability to track and see if it was true or not. Do you think that the Russians would have stayed silent if it was a fake . .course not, so they had proof themselves . . or they would have been screaming from the hill tops and claimed a massive victory over the USA to expose them as fakes etc. They didnt and gave up their attempts as the USA beat them to it. . simple as that.

i agee ,man did not land on the moon they did not have the tecnoligy then.it was a hoax to beat the russians ,as they were ahead of us in the space projects

harry

Are we supposed to believe that we spent all the money landing on the moon, then lost the original film of the event. Please. Give me a break. Neil Armstrong doesn't want to talk about it because he is fed up lying.

if the americans didn't land on the moob, then how come jodrel bank are still using the very same tests that were left behind by the americans, which they operate by firing a lazer up to the moon.that's good enough for me,plus it didn't hurt that they had the cream of the @#$% rocket scientists, including von baun working for them.not to mention, the russains and other nations were tracking them

Nice one! There are many for misseries like this around us that needs to be investigated and details activities explained. Science sometimes is like a fiction. The Astronauts knew well what the exact theory is.

It was a fantastic a achievement ,when you consider that the digital watch or the pocket calculator hadn’t even been invented back in 69.

I think that man has always produced his best work when under pressure. This time it was from the Russians.

Most great advances have come about in this way you have only to look at the number of inventions and innovations that come about due to war.

Bob – thank you , i have been saying this about the Russian for years! People who think the Moon landings were a hoax are just rather sad human beings. Firstly , so 1/2 a million people have stayed silent for 40 years, even on their deathbeds? Secondly why the heck fake it 6 times ( 7 if you include Apollo 13)?? ,Thirdly , as Bob points out , do you really think if the Russians had the slightest suspicion they would have not checked it out and let us all know??? Oh and Harrymearns – if you are going to try to be an expert of 60's technology, at least learn to spell it properly.

Harry.mearns says it was a hoax and the US did not have the technology. What evidence do you have to support this statement?
